Cracked Earth
Painted Hills, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Oregon

After about 12 years, my wife and I finally returned together to the Painted Hills of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. We were on a week-long trip through parts of Oregon's high deserts, and this destination was on our path. It was good to be back. The light was not dramatic as during my solo visit in 2003, when I made Painted Hills & Sunset Storm, but no matter, the place is simply breathtaking and we stood in awe enjoying the views.

This image is a detailed look of one of the hills at dusk: delicate popcorn texture shaped by water and time. The color is from the minerals present in this ancient volcanic ash.
