Tree Ghosts
Mt. Baker Wilderness, Washington

As I scrambled about on massive and jagged basalt boulders at the edge of one of Mt. Baker's lava fields, I was struck by these stark and yet beautiful tree skeleton "ghosts" rising from a sea of brilliant vine maples. These vine maples really grew thick in this lava depression, thriving in the thin but rich soil. I still wonder how long these tree ghosts have stood here enduring the seasons.
